1:19 am - What need would Atlantis have of an applied mathematician?

allaire
In short, I want to write a crossover between Stargate: Atlantis and Numb3rs.

Now I only need to find a compelling reason why the SGC would aggressively try to recruit Charles Eppes, one of the main characters of Numb3rs and, in that universe, a young mathematical genius and professor of applied mathematics at the fictional California Institute of Science.

Charlie is famous for applying mathematical concepts to real-life situations in his position as a consultant for the FBI as well as for various other government agencies (also the NSA, among others). He uses math to solve crimes and works closely with an expert on quantum physics, his friend and mentor, Larry Fleinhardt (who has written a paper on zero-point energy and traveled to the ISS as a payload specialist). He's also good at statistics, combinatorics, and cryptanalysis.

Various crossovers I've read usually have Charlie come to Atlantis either to help Rodney McKay in figuring out how to create and/or recharge ZPMs, or in decyphering a cryptic note left by the Ancients, leading the Atlanteans to some kind of Ancient treasure trove of tech.

Frankly, both options have been done often enough. I'd prefer to aim for something new, but my "Eureka!" moment is eluding me.

Does anyone of you (provided this comm still gets read at all) have an idea for me? Why would Atlantis need Charlie Eppes? Why?!

3:34 pm - Canon/fanon natural ATA gene carriers

taste_is_sweet
Hi, everyone! This comm has been a great resource before, so I'm hoping you guys can help me with this one.

Aside from Jack O'Neill, John Sheppard, Carson Beckett, Evan Lorne and Miko Kusanagi (assuming they're the same person), are there any other canon or fanon natural ATA gene carriers on Atlantis or at the SGC?

Thank you!

9:35 pm - Medical Question

vampiegirl
If you have your arm chopped off then re-attached. In this case it is the forearm and a clean slice with a bladed weapon. There are several hours before it is reattached. Assuming that the bleeding was stopped and the wound dressed promptly.

a) What are the chances that it can be reattached and if so what would the procedure be. I know that in some cases a metal framework is used but I can’t remember its name.
b) How long before it would be unfeasible to reattach it.

Maybe it's just my mind playing tricks on me, but I feel like the SG-1 team has middle names and they were said maybe once and never again. Of course, O'neill's is Jack, but I tried researching the others and found nothing. Is this just wishful thinking, or has there ever been a mention?

4:15 pm - Goa'uld detection and implantation

michelel72
I've looked through the past entries here and don't see anything directly on point for this. I'm primarily SGA; I've watched much of SG-1 but am weak on exactly what happened when, so there's no such thing as too much information, and any references to canon confirmations would be cherished! (I have all seasons of both shows.)

1) Sam can detect someone who is Goa'uld or Tok'ra, yes? (That whole "was a host" thing.) Is it established how far that effect works? Does she have to be within touching distance? I'm guessing a mile away would be no good, but would a room away — or from a corridor outside a room — be at all plausible?

2) I've read stories in which people are unwillingly implanted with Goa'uld. Has that ever happened onscreen? If so, or even in otherwise-canon-faithful fanon, would there be one host and another, unhosted Goa'uld in, like, a suitcase or something? Would a host instead be abandoned by a Goa'uld looking to move into a better-placed host? Specifically around the end of season 7 of SG-1, the start of season 8 of SG-1, and the start of SGA, would the Trust be likely to be involved in such an action, and if so, how would that influence the other elements of this topic? Basically, say you have someone being cornered and threatened with implantation — what's most likely, and what just wouldn't happen?

6:27 pm - SG Gate team military forces

michelel72
In SG-1, especially before SGA started, were the military exclusively Air Force? Were Marines normally included on teams? Are there any good references or episode citations in favor of "only Air Force", "also Marines", or "all armed forces" arguments?

11:09 am - Question About Vegas

savingfaith333
Does anyone know the make/model of the car Sheppard drives in Vegas? I've been poring over screencaps all morning and I can't find any discernable markings on either the front or the back of the car. Thanks for any info y'all might have!

4:58 pm - DADT Question?

sentientcitizen
Ignorant Canadian with a question about the whole "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" thing. If someone in the USAF - from somewhere in the airmen tier, say - suspected that one of their superiors - a company or field grade officer - was a homosexual/engaged in homosexual acitivities, what would they do? File a complaint? Request a meeting with their superior officer (Hammond, in this case, I guess)? Whats't the official policy/procedure? I tried to find it on my own, but apparnelty my Google-fu has failed me. ^^'

Thanks!

10:57 am - Wraith Font

jadesfire
I don't know if anyone's around here, but if you are...

I was wondering if anyone knew of the existence of a Wraith font, equivalent to the Ancient one that's out there. I've flicked through some screencaps, and can tell it's based on Ancient, although most of the stuff I've seen is pretty much gobbledegook (letters inverted, nonsense words, that kind of thing). Is there any kind of official or fan-deciphered version of the Wraith alphabet out there? Because I can probably figure it out, but it's going to take me a while...

1:40 am - font="Anquitas"

saphanibaal
So some time ago, I downloaded something purporting to be a font for the Ancient system of writing. I'm afraid I've forgotten whence.

And then, looking at the picture of the Ancient writing on Wikipedia's page for the Ancients (provenance uncertain), I notice that it believes that this is "x" and that this is "q," which is exactly backwards from the values assigned by my nice if bare-bones font.

Does anyone know which one is correct? Is there an authoritative source? Should I just note "these two letters are reversed in some texts, nobody really knows why?"

(And by the way, this is clearly a writing system designed to be written by the left-handed, you'd think it'd go right-to-left.)

10:51 am - Prometheus and Daedalus -- names?

saphanibaal
Does anyone know whether the names were chosen solely with respect to their mythological bearers, whether they are a nod to Macross, or whether both instances are a reference to something disgustingly famous that I'm just not getting? Because both names in succession seem a little too apt to be pure coincidence, but I haven't located a common source yet.

9:07 pm - Where is Cameron Mitchell from?

leahwoof
Kansas? Nebraska? Oklahoma? Iowa? I know it's some grain-belt state that McKay would roll his eyes at and mutter something nasty about, but I can't think of which, exactly. Does anyone remember?

Thank you hugely,

Leah

Edit: How about that--Scifi.com actually has pertinent details for once. It is, indeed, Kansas. (Just in case anyone else needs to know.)

10:59 pm - Timeline for Prometheus and/or other such ships

taste_is_sweet
Hello everyone! I'm hoping you can help me with a bit of canon.

Was the Prometheus built and/or in use before season one of SGA/season eight of SG1? If not, which ship was it? I basically need a ship that was of the same type that would have been in use shortly before the Atlantis expedition left, but I can't remember when those ships were first built.

Any help you could give with this would be awesome. Thank you in advance!

1:36 am - ...so I *still* haven't seen the crossover episode "The Pegasus Project..."

saphanibaal
but I'd like to know whether the Morgan le Fey in it was identified solely as Morgan, or whether she had another (Ancient) name as well (as Moros did, unless he was meant to actually be a grandfather or something).

1:11 am - quick question on military language

kaizoku
So, I know that when you're asking someone to repeat themselves on the radio, you say "say again," and that "repeat" means fire again. But what if you're repeating *yourself*? Would you just say it or would you say something like "Blah blah. Saying again: blah blah" or "Blah blah, I repeat: blah blah"?

Also, is there any way to know if the iris is closed from the other (going through) side? e.g. if you threw something through and it hit the wall? I don't think there is, but maybe I'm wrong.

Thanks in advance.

9:25 pm - SGA/SG-1 Timeline Question

cinaed
I know that Daniel was going to go on the Daedalus in 9x01 "Avalon: Part 1" to Atlantis.

However, it didn't seem to me to be that first rescue mission with Everett as the leader, rather it appeared to be one of the following travels with Caldwell in command. Thus, Daniel's arrival (if he had managed to go) wouldn't have been "The Siege III." Of course, that's only an assumption, since I haven't watched "Avalon: Part 1" in a while. If someone disagrees and can point out that yes, it was the rescue mission with Everett, just kick me. *grin*

Does anyone have an idea of when the Daedalus's arrival would have been set in the Atlantis timeline?

7:13 pm - Accents?

saphanibaal
I have no ear for accents. I do well to tell the difference between British and American ones, but anything more complicated than that and I go all to pieces.

Yet people commonly make guesses as to where people are from based on their accent, or declare that X cannot be from area Y because he has a Z accent.

Has someone made a list (for people like me or for ESL speakers or anything) of who on Atlantis speaks with what accent? It would be useful.

4:13 pm - Tac Vests and Bullets

sgatlantislight
So, somewhere once upon a time, I ran across a post about the uniforms the SGA folks wear and what you might find in the pockets of a tac vest and so on. And now I can't find it. Because I was wanting to know the identity of the tac vests they wear to get some idea of bullet-stopping ability.

Basically, I'm wanting someone to get shot and I want it to be pretty serious and scary. And, hey, I've written people getting shot, in the torso, before and it never even occurred to me to wonder whether that's likely, but suddenly it occurred to me as I was working on this story. And, well, is it likely that someone wearing a tac vest like the offworld teams wear could get shot in the torso and actually have it penetrate the rib cage or should I go for another location?
